The Urbanized Area Formula Program provides federal assistance to urbanized areas for financing transit capital and planning projects, job access and reverse commute projects, associated transit improvements, security projects, and certain operating costs. An urbanized area is a designation by the US Department of Commerce, Bureau of the Census, given to incorporated areas with population of 50,000 or more.
Funds are awarded in a two-step process where the majority of the funds are allocated to traditional public transit providers with a small amount set aside for competitive award to non-profits and non-traditional transit providers to support Job Access/Reverse Commute projects in the Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington and Denton-Lewisville urbanized areas.
